SICKNESS INSURANCE IN THE SOCIAL INSURANCE SYSTEM

Purpose – The main objective of the present work is to present the role and importance of the sickness insurance in the system of social insurance, particularly in the context of revenues and expenses of the Social Insurance Fund.
Research method – The study includes a review of the literature on the subject, an analysis and synthesis of the discussed issues as well as an analysis of data reported by the Social Insurance Institution. An analysis of financial data covers the years 2017-2021 and was performed with the use of structure and dynamics indexes.
Results – the main purpose of sickness insurance, understood as social security against the risk of incapacity for work, is realised in a form of benefits, i.e. sickness allowance, compensatory allowance, rehabilitation benefit, maternity allowance and care allowance. Expenses related to payment of the enlisted benefits constitute only about 10 per cent of the total expenditure of the Social Insurance Fund. In the analysed period, the greatest fluctuations occurred within care allowance, what was caused by limitations related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Revenues of the Social Insurance Fund, without separating its particular funds, were sourced from contributions and in 2021 reached the level of the revenue expenditure coverage ratio.
